About
All our tiles are handmade from terracotta earthenware clay which is rolled flat between sheets of linen before being pressed using a square tile cutter. They are left to dry slowly until ‘leather hard’ and then decorated, in layers, using our paper stencil and coloured slip technique.
Controlling the process from the very start means the finished surface is fully integral to the tile structure. Linen leaves a woven textile ‘imprint’, plaster and wood stamps add depth and sgraffito lines scratched through the slip give fine texture. Coloured slip layers build the image before the bisque firing followed by a higher glaze firing. Accents of gold lustre are applied before the third and final firing.
Recently I have been working on a collection of ‘Story Tiles’ that are intended to be hung or placed as individual works. To read more about the inspiration behind these tiles please read our blog.
